  Trophy was actually derived from a Greek word. “Tropaion” came from the verb “trope,” meaning “to rout.” Ancient Greece used to make trophies on the battlefields of successful fights. The particulars of the battle, along with an inscription to a god, were frequently inscribed on the bases of the symbols. They were often dedicated to gods, and to destroy them was viewed as a blasphemy.

  In ancient Rome, trophies were extremely large and were oftentimes placed on pillars and arches. Instead of being a homage to the victors and the gods on the battlefield, the Romans wanted them constructed in Rome.

  Not a great deal is known about its history during the Middle Ages. However, it is believed that they were used as prizes for sporting events in the late 1600s. The regular shapes used then were silver goblets and two-handled sterling cups.

  Probably the supreme mark of victory is a trophy. The usual setting is the bigger the trophy, the highest the achievement. From the biggest of contests, such as major sports events, to the humblest of matches, like a local elementary school’s Spelling Bee contest, trophies are everywhere.

  Although cups and chalices are still predominant in this day and age, trophies now come in different kinds and sizes. More and more shapes are now being produced, depending on the event, including stars, human and animal shapes, and abstract designs.

  For mass production, materials used nowadays include steel, pewter, crystal, and plastic. They are a great deal less pricey and can be mass created.

  Apart from sports, trophies are also awarded in acknowledgment of an individual or group achievement. Example is from the Hollywood major awards event The Academy Awards, where individual talents (acting, directing, producing, etc.) and group efforts (film, cast, etc.) are recognized with a stylized human award.

  It’s not only a prize for a specific accomplishment in sports, acting, discovery or other skills. A trophy represents victory and position. It doesn’t just mean being able to defeat your opponents in a game or contest or being the leader in your field of expertise. Being honored with a trophy also means being part of the trophy’s legacy.
