Welcome to Quick Sustainable Wealth TV, I’m Robert Skrob and here I am at my pool. A place where I love to come to read, to relax, and to do writing. I have a special story for you. It seems like just a few years ago my daughter Samantha was learning her multiplication tables. And the teacher sent home a project. It was a sheet of one hundred multiplication tables or multiplication problems and it was just two plus four, eight plus seven, six plus four; those types of things. And that’s all, six times four. And my daughter had to learn how to do a hundred of them within five minutes.

So, no problem. We sat her down at the kitchen table and said, “Ok, great. Let’s get started.” And all of a sudden the tears started flowing. She got from question one and she just “I can’t do it”. And then two. It was terrible! It lasted for forty five minutes, trying to get through these questions. There were tears; she erased the paper so hard she ripped it.

And you know, no matter how many times we tried to explain, “Hey look, if you just tried and did it, you’d be done by now. But all of this crying isn’t getting you anywhere.” All of these tears, trouble never got anywhere. But finally after forty five minutes she got it done and we were able to move on. Thank goodness.

But we had to do it again the next day. Next day, each one was just violently difficult. And she worked through crying, tears and frustration but she was finished. And this time was only twenty seven minutes. Almost half as long. A huge increase, but still drama, frustration, anger and tears all involved in this. Just getting this multiplication table done. Next day, not so bad. No tears but still a bit frustrating. But she got it done in eighteen minutes.

Within a week she had it down to ten minutes and within two weeks of doing it every single day she had it in five minutes flat. There for a while, a couple of days she would get it done in five minutes. She’d miss one or two, but then within three weeks she was able to get the whole page done in a lot less than four minutes.

Of course, I tried to explain to her, “Hey, you ought to go back and check your work” but she never did. She just got it done in four minutes and moved on. And it occurred to me that this is how all learning happens. You ever start something new, you’re learning a new skill, maybe it’s learning copywriting for the first time or website programming or you got a new piece of software that you’re trying to figure out how it works. And at first it’s like “OH!” and it’s painful I hate it. You just get that feeling on your skin and it just drives you crazy. That is learning.

Unfortunately that’s the process. There is this physical reaction to trying to learn something new that your body rejects it. We don’t want this. But then you force your way through and as painful as it is then you finish. You do it again and it’s half as easy. And then in three weeks you can do it without even thinking. I mean think about driving. How many times, I mean I remember when I was driving down the road for the first time. I was scared to death. My mom had a full sized van. And the cars, they were coming up so fast on the highway. It was a two lane road and they were coming by, it seemed like they were going to hit me. It was all I could do to stay way on the right hand side of the road to try to avoid them. Now I go down the road and I don’t even think about it.

How many times do you drive for twenty minutes and all of a sudden you realize, I’ve made turns, I’ve navigated and I didn’t even realize I was driving, I was thinking about something else. That is learning. That is what it is all about. It’s difficult at the beginning. It’s scary, there is even this negative physical reaction but once you get through it you’re able to do it so much more easily. That is learning.

So the next time you feel that feeling, you feel that pain and you are like “I can’t do it”, do it because that is learning. Your succeeding. That’s the feeling you want to know so that you can break through and break free and implement in you business. And I really started analyzing my clients and figured out who was profitable, where I was making my money from and I figured out that I was making my profit, eighty percent of it was coming from only twenty percent of my clients.

Well, it was difficult but I got rid of the eighty percent that weren’t making me any money. And that also required me to get rid of employees, to get rid of overhead, and to get rid of a lot of stuff that wasn’t serving me or my business. It was a huge pruning. I can tell you that process involved cussing, it involved yelling at me, accusations by the employees, they talked about I was destroying the company. But in the end, within just a few months, I was making thousands of dollars a month and all it required was a lot of pruning. And pruning clients, pruning expenses and all of a sudden I was spurred for growth.

And I haven’t looked back. I’ve been able to multiply myself many times. I was able to have a whole lot more time. It was that pruning, while scary and trying and difficult as chopping off a branch would be to a plant, it was to me and it may very well be to you but it’s the secret to success.

So many of us add things; we think we have to add a client, we’ve got to add more projects, we’ve got to add a marketing system, we’ve got to add a new system, we’ve got to add a new business process. We’ve got to add software; we think that success comes from doing more. Success and growth often comes from pruning. Look at what you can prune. Where does your profit come? Where are the most viable growth opportunities? And get rid of everything else. Start with only what serves your purpose and that is the secret to growth.

And I have some, a neat special gift for you but first a story. Social media, I get a lot of questions, a lot of people say, “I see all of these programs about getting rich using social media. I see all of these things about building lots of customers and really lots of new growth.” Well, social media is a very important tool and let me tell you how it fits. Remember that Chamber of Commerce business after hour’s events where there, where you used to go and when you were new you didn’t really know very many people. Maybe you went with some co-workers or maybe you went with friends but either way you kind of got there and you sought out the people that you already knew. And say you found Jack from across the room. You go over to Jack, “Hey Jack, how are you?” and then pretty soon Jack and you were talking and somebody who might know Jack and someone else would come up to you and be Marci.

And Jack would go, “Hey, this is Marci my friend” and introduce you to Marci and Marci to you and know all of a sudden you know two people at the event. And then somebody who might know you comes up and you introduce them to Jack and Marci and so four of you know each other.

That is networking. It’s been around for years. It’s a very old form of marketing. And nothing really particularly is new about it. That is social media. You go online to Face book or wherever and you reach out to the people you already know. “Hey, here’s my Facebook profile. Here’s my online profile for your business”. You set up a fan page and you let your customers know that there’s a page that they can come and interact with each other. It is kind of like a business after hour’s invitation. Your customers can network together and then you can network with me and I can provide you information and ongoing updates, that’s all.

Just kind of reconnecting via social media. Well what about the marketing? Well, it’s as useful as a business after hour’s event. It’s networking after all. And certainly networking has a place and all marketing strategies but getting rich? No. About generating floods of new customers? No. Where there are some people who did it? Maybe. I don’t know. I haven’t seen when you boil it down. I’ve certainly heard the stories. I’ve heard lots of stories for people who have done it. And then whether they were really successful and generated the real customers of any kind of value who’s to say they don’t have the numbers or they aren’t sharing them. They certainly have all kinds of hyperbole about how much money they may have made but it doesn’t, no one that I know has shared any numbers that had any results and I see a lot of business numbers.

I see a whole lot of my coaching clients and consulting clients coming to me bringing me their financials, bringing me their marketing metrics. I can see where their investing in marketing, see what they are doing and the social media is a great strategy. Generate some customers. But you need to watch the return on investment. Watch it for yourself and the real marketing strategies are systems and processes to reach out to customers who don’t know you yet. Let them know that you exist, let them know you solve problems that they have and then invite them to be customers. Systematic step by step processes where they can get to know you, get to like you, trust you and then become a customer. That is what succeeds. That is what generates customers, not social media.

Now social media can be one of the ways that they get to know you. That’s a good tool, that’s a good tool of social media and it’s very useful in that. But in order replace a marketing system or as a life rings that you throw out in order to rescue your business. Fortunately social media is not that. Hard work and creating a marketing system with a follow up sequence and still what’s required in today’s world.

I’ve got a neat story for you about my son and ten and under football. See, eight and under football, he was pretty much the fastest kid on the team.

He scored touchdowns and man he was great. He loved it and he was able to run the ball a bunch and you know kind of with the football where if you ran right at a kid, they would kind of jump out of the way and work to grab your flag.

Or, if a kid was coming right at you, they would try to juke around you in order to avoid you pulling their flag. Well, ten and under football is completely different. Now, it’s still a flag football game, but the players, the ten year olds, are so much bigger than the nine year olds which is where my son was. They don’t need to slow down or go around the player. They can just run right over him and it is kind of short you know, he’s not as tall as some of the other kids. And they didn’t think anything of just bowling over him.

And when he is lying on the ground he can’t pull their flag. Well, it didn’t take but a couple of these and he hated football. And I’m sad to say he just despised it because they were just running over him. He was like, “But I don’t understand. They are supposed to go around me and not through me.” Well, no it’s part of the game. They can go through or around, it’s a choice and they choose to go through and you’ve got to be able to pull the flag in spite of that.

But then he wasn’t getting to play when he wanted to play. He was running back before and now all of a sudden he’s not running back and he’s like, why when the coach is supposed to rotate us around. No, you know ten and under football is about winning. And it’s not fair to the good players to put the good players in less important positions because then the team wouldn’t perform as well.

He’s got to put the good players in the best positions so that they can get the best results for the team overall. But everybody is supposed to play. It’s all about having fun. No, eight and under football may very well be about having fun. Ten and under football is about winning and success. And as I worked through that with my son and had that experience, I remember vividly sitting at the kitchen table and having that discussion.

And then just a few minutes later, I was sitting out on my back deck thinking about that. I was enjoying a cigar and thinking about that experience and going, you know what? I complain all of the time and it shouldn’t be this hard. I should be able to generate more customers in my business. I should be able to do marketing and it generates results. Or, I should be able to tell an employee how to do something provides instructions, and they follow the checklist. I should be able to give a project to a vendor and they deliver it finished.

Well, that may be in some other world but not in this world. This is the equivalent of ten and under football. It’s about success. And people bow you over. Coaches put the best players and even when you do your best, sometimes you don’t get the results that you think you deserve. That is life. That is ten and under football. And we have to suck it up just like my son did. Even though we don’t like it, we still have to deal with what it is. Not with what should be or we wish we were or what it happened to be or what we would like it to be.

This is the real world. And unfortunately, it’s not fair. And a lot of times, it’s damn difficult. But, success comes through persistence through that and making it happen anyway. Entrepreneurs break through and employees allow those types of obstacles to stop them. And that is the difference. This is your entrepreneurial moment.

This is a time where you can succeed. Don’t take no for an answer. If you get knocked down by a bigger bully, you jump up and beat them next time. If you don’t get the results you think you deserve from this speech, you make it better and give it again. If you don’t get the results you want from a sales presentation, do it again. Make it better, rehearsed. Get a new approach. Improve and win. That is where success comes from. And that is how you can break through no matter what.
